What do babies do when they are born?

Let's see, a woman who is in labor pushes the baby out, usually with the excited dad coaching her on. Once the baby is out of the womb unless there is a very short cord the midwife or doctor lifts the baby up for mom to place against her breast and a Nurse will start drying the baby off with a warm towel - often this is done as much to stimulate the baby into taking a great big surprised breath as it is to dry the babe off. At one minute after birth and at five minutes - a new born gets their first formal examination called the Apgar - 5 observations worth up to 2 points each regarding the baby's first minutes of life. Respiratory effort, heart rate, muscle tone, skin color and reflex irritability (the response of the baby to a stimulus like suctioning).

After the umbilical cord stops pulsing it is cut and clamped. The new mom may be given a shot of oxytocin to make the uterus clamp down to prevent hemorrhage. The doctor then checks the woman for cuts or tears and stitches her vagina or perineum if she needs it. The baby may start nursing right away or may wait till later. The woman usually delivers the placenta within 30 minutes or so and the doctor will check to see that it is intact.

After mom and dad are done counting fingers and toes, the baby is weighed, measured and given a quick once over, the temperature, heart and lungs are checked, baby is given a shot of vitamin K (to prevent bleeding) and antibiotic ointment is placed on the babies eyes to prevent infection. If the baby is warm enough this may be the perfect time for their first bath. Mom is being helped to a nice fresh bed, fresh gown and spruced up for family members who are anxiously waiting to meet the newest member.

There are dozens of variations on this, and this is a best case scenario when the baby and mom are both in good condition. But more or less this is what happens.
