Probably for the same reason Christians want people to read the Bible. The Bible was written by the Creator of not only the universe, but also of man. God wants everyone to know Him and His Son, Jesus Christ and the salvation plan that they have given to the world's population. There is nothing in this world that matches salvation (being saved from your sin and having eternal life). Just reading the bible will not save you as many persons have read the bible but have not been saved, but it is a very good place to start. To really know the bible you need to know its Author.
