Working was the repayment; they had to give a certain amount of their annual produce, called a tithe, to their lord. Many were also required to give military service where necessary for the defense of the land (including defense against invasion of the country as a whole) or as part of that lord's tithe to his own lord.

A peasant owned no land, so they weren't directly a part of the feudal system. Many peasants worked on lands owned by knights or nobles.
There was no similarity in their lives. Nobles lived in Manor houses or castles, owned land, prevented people from poaching on their lands, had food, warmth, and money. Peasants had nothing but a wattle hut with a dirt floor, a 3 legged stool to sit on, taxes to pay, to die an early death fighting a war for the nobility or disease, and very little warmth in the winter wet months.
The peasants
There was no foreign owned plantations in the middle ages. The "plantation" system developed in the south and Caribbean in the late 1700's and early 1800's. This is several hundred years after the middle ages. Peasants worked on the land owned by the king. In Europe in the middle ages there was a patch work of holdings by nobles who gained land from marriages and the king as a reward for service. There wasn't "foreign owned" lands.
Fief
Feudalism decreased. Nobles sold land to get money to fight in Crusade; when nobles died, the kings got nobles' lands from nobles and serfs became free if they fought in Crusade/ king gets profit.
The King does give the land to the Nobles so they can help fight to defend the King's land, him and his kingdom (castle).
Medieval lords were the nobles in charge of lands and castles. They owed allegiance to the kings.
