Luther confirmed he was the author but did not respond to the second question until the following day when he gave his "Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures. . . "speech. Father Eck pointed out that every heretic who has ever existed said the same thing, and drew various nefarious arguments from the Sacred Scriptures, like Pelagius and Arius. He reminded Luther that Arius had used the Scriptures to prove that Jesus was not eternal. How was Luther any different? He was speaking like a heretic.
Luther refused to recant and was declared a heretic and an outlaw of the state, and made it a crime for anyone in Germany to give Luther food or housing.

When he was asked the same question the next day, Luther apologized for the harsh tone of many of his writings, but said that he could not reject the majority of them or the teachings in them. Luther respectfully but boldly stated, "Unless I am convinced by proofs from Scriptures or by plain and clear reasons and arguments, I can and will not retract, for it is neither safe nor wise to do anything against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen." On May 25, Emperor Charles the Fifth issued his Edict of Worms, declaring Martin Luther an outlaw.
