The infantry component of their expeditionary force. The cavalry was embarked in their ships headed around the coast for Athens, hoping to capture the city, with traitors opening the gates for them, in the absence if the Athenian army at Marathon.

It was the absence of the Persian cavalry which brought the Athenians to attack before the arrival of the awaited reinforcements from Sparta; the Athenian and Plataian armoured infantry was superior to the Persian unarmoured infantry, so they took the chance when the Persian cavalry was away.
