Moors were among the Muslims who invaded Spain 711. They settled southern Spain, and maintained kingdoms there until 1492, when they were conquered, and most of them left soon after as a result of practices of the Spanish Inquisition. In the meantime, they had contributed to one of the most advanced societies in Europe.

Rice was introduced to Europe in the 10th century by Moors in Spain. It was also brought to Italy by Arabs and was grown as far north as southern France by the end of the Middle Ages.
