Japanese armies were stationed on the Eurasian mainland (Manchuria, India, Burma, etc.). The Pacific was a naval war and no Japanese armies were garrisoned in the Pacific.

The majority of them fought for their government's aims including invading Singapore and other Asian countries. Those who guarded Allied POWs gained a terrible reputation for barbarity, for which no succeeding Japanese government has wanted to face up to.
