They ate food from the paleolithic period. They chewed many different plants and ground some of them into pastes for easier consumption. What they ate speciffically depends on what was around for vegetation and animals. They ate a lot of plants.
While males were out looking for walking protein to eat, in the form of easily brought down game, or carcasses abandoned by large predators, females stayed in the vicinity of the living territory and collected local vegetation like berries, nuts, and roots to add to the diet. If it was plentiful, it might be stored in a skull or other convenient receptacle whereupon local bacteria would get to work on it and cause it to ferment. The lucky person that got to drink any liquid that resulted from overextended storage without refrigeration might get the world's first "buzz".
Eventually someone (Unhg, probably) caught on to the idea that certain plants always seemed to recur in a specific spot, figured out that seeds falling nearby turned into more of the same plant, and that if they spread them out further, they got even more edible plants. Thus was born Agriculture. Over time, more varieties were added to the diet, and soon, with a dependable food supply there was a new thing invented called leisure where one had time to think and plan. Soon there was excess grain, so relatively harmless animals were collected (browsers like goats and small fowl) and fed the excess grain, domesticated, used to supply rich protein like eggs, hides for clothing, and killed when convenient for eating.
They ate plants from the ground and hunted animals.
Since they were hunter and gatherers, they ate meat, berries, fish, nuts, and insects. Thye would follow their food source and collect vegetables and fruits on the way.
