Many people died from bugs, accidents, and types of diseases. Some people probably died from walking, starvation, and dehydration. Babies died from starving to death and some people drowned from swimming across rivers and streams and other deep bodies of water.

Yes. The final section of the trail involved either rafting down the Columbia river (which was MUCH more dangerous before the dams were built) or taking a dangerous toll road over mount Hood. Many of the rafts were swamped and some people drowned. I'm sure some people drowned crossing other rivers on the trail too.

They died in many ways. Some died of disease or accidents. Others in child birth. They had to cross flooded rivers so some drowned. They went over mountain passes and some fell down cliffs trying to save a wagon. They fought rain, snow, heat, dust storms, tornados, and were exposed to conditions we can't even manage. They were brave people.
