Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire under Constantine. After the Roman Empire collapsed in the West, Europe fell into chaos. Europe was overrun with Barbarians and Viking raiders. These people brought with them their own religions. During the chaos, the monks and nuns continued to live fairly self-sufficiently and isolated from the rest of the world. Monks and nuns were usually the only educated people in a given area and could read and write and teach others to do so. Behind closed walls, they continued the teachings and traditions of the Christian Church and copied the Holy Bible and sang the traditional songs. Monks were some of the first to practice rudimentary science experiments (i.e. Gregor Mendel and his pea plants). A monk, Martin Luther, help start the Protestant Reformation. Whether Roman Catholic or Protestant, the early desert fathers predated the Reformation by centuries and so they truly are a part of every Christian's heritage. Monks and nuns preserved the Church in the past. They may have to do so again in the future.
