The cotton gin (Cotton Engine) was designed to process more cotton to help decrease the demand for slaves. It did the opposite. More slaves were needed to work in the fields to supply the cotton gins with cotton. Cotton production increased at an enormous rate.

In a sense, it worked too well.

The Cotton Gin is a machine invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. It was originally the "Cotton Engine" but was changed to Cotton Gin. It is a machine that takes the cotton (still with the seeds) and separates the seeds without breaking them. If the seeds were to break the cotton would get oily and would be unusable.

A cotton gin is not a factory. The gin takes raw cotton and removes the seeds. Cotton bolls are very dense and before the gin was invented by Whitney the slaves were made to remove the seeds by hand. The gin allowed more cotton to be grown and production grew. The cotton gin is still used today and the cotton once it is processed it is baled and sold at auction.
