Amundsen led the team to be the first to navigate the Northern Passage between Greenland and Alaska.

As well, Roald Amundsen explored Antarctica and led the team that was first to set foot at the South Pole.

Roald Amundsen was a noted Norwegian explorer. He planned to be the first to the North Pole, but having been beaten by Frederick Cook and Robert Peary, he then altered his plans to make for the South Pole. He set out for Antarctica in 1910, and became the first to reach the South Pole on 14 December 1911, beating British explorer Robert Falcon Scott.

Just a footnote.

Had Amundsen kept to his original plan, he would have been the first person to reach the North Pole as the claims of Cook and Peary have been proven to be false.

The Gjoa Expedition, led by Amundsen, indeed found a passage by way of the 'Baffin Bay, the Parry Channel and then south through Peel Sound, James Ross Strait, Simpson Strait and Rae Strait'.

Because their ship had a shallow draft -- the route they took proved not to be a commercial route.
