After he got his degree. he worked as a college instructor and later president of Hiram College for 5 years, studied law and was elected to the Ohio State Senate. He served as Major General during the US Civil War . He ran for Congress in 1862 while still in uniform and was elected to nine terms. He represented the 19th district of Ohio in the House of Representatives from 1863-1881. He is the only sitting member of the House to be elected President.
