Pierce was not nominated for a second term in 1856 and his wife was in ill health, so they made a long tour of Europe and spent some time in the Bahamas. Eventually they came home to Concord. Pierce became known as a Southern sympathizer after the Civil War broke out. He had always argued that Franklin and Adams had accepted Washington and Jefferson as slave owners and that slavery was part of the deal that made the federal union possible . He felt that the South was pushed into secession by the threat that their constitution right to keeping slaves was in danger of being abridged . He was against the war and his views were very unpopular-- in fact he was seen as a traitor by many. In 1863 ,his wife died, he started drinking heavily and was mostly unhappy until he died on October 8,1869. He was 64 years old.

He did not do much. He did not need the money and his health was poor. He may have done some legal work. He became unpopular in his home town because of his opposition to fighting the Confederacy. He believed a truce could be worked out to end the war.

Life went downhill for Pierce after he left the White House. He did not get the nomination to run for a second term, so his political career was over. He made speeches that branded him as a Southern sympathizer and he became very unpopular in his hometown. His wife never did recover from her depression and then she died.
