We should never say that an experiment has proven something. The Rutherford gold foil experiment led to the hypothesis that an atom's positive charge is concentrated in an incredibly small space at the atom's center.

J.J. Thomson's model. Thomson's model said that electrons and protons are together
uniformly distributed in the atom but Rutherford's model proved that most of the space
in an atom is empty and it consists of a heavy centre where all the positive charge is concentrated.
He also said that electrons revolved around the nucleus but was unable to give proper
explanation for it.
