Music was heard during the 70s using several mediums. The first that comes to mind is the two or three speed phonogragh or HiFi. The speeds were 45rpm, 33 1/3rpm and the third speed was 78rpm which was on its way out. The first two were the most popular. A send method of listening was an AM/FM radio, either mono or stereo. The third method was a reel to reel (7" reels were very popular) tape player. If you wanted to listen to the music in your car, again, the AM/FM radio and 4 track tape players which were replaced with the 8 track player. The four and eight track players were stereo. All of the tape players, except for the cassette, used 1/4" wide tape. The cassette tape was 1/8" wide. The recording/playback speeds of the reel to reel were 15, 7.5, 3.75 and 1.875 inches per second. The faster the speed, the better the quality of the recording.

The radio, of course. The radio was invented during the roaring 20's when the U.S. was at an economic peak. Then, when the Great Depression, the worst economic downfall of America, struck in October of 1929, radio was an important part of American lives. From keeping updated on worldwide news in FDR's famous 'fireside chats', to bringing tv-like characters' voices and stories to young children, the radio played an important role in American lives. To answer your question in short, RADIO. Lol
