Any of the degrees earned from medical schools can be used to become a dermatologist so a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (D.O.), Doctor of Medicine degree (M.D.), or a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB) degree can be used. In addition to one of these medical degrees, a physician must have a medical license and must have completed a residency in dermatology training. When you search for a dermatologist, make sure they have been board certified by the American Board of Dermatology or the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology or both.

You need 4 years of college and then you need to apply to medical school and get accepted. Medical school is 4 years. Then you apply to a residency in Dermatology and after acceptance, there is an additional 4 years of specialty training in Dermatology. There is currently NO official board certification is Cosmetic Dermatology, as defined by the major and accepted American Board of Medical Specialties (for a complete list see http://www.abms.org/Who_We_Help/Physicians/specialties.aspx) If a dermatologist is interested in cosmetic dermatology, it is best to apply to residency program that offers specific training in cosmetic dermatology procedures during the residency training. Different programs have different emphases, such as research, medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, etc. There are lesser accepted "boards" that will offer tests and certification in "Cosmetic Dermatology" and "Cosmetic Surgery" but these are not looked upon with the same stature and recognition as those recognized by the 'gold standard' American Board of Medical Specialties (for a complete list see http://www.abms.org/Who_We_Help/Physicians/specialties.aspx). After completing a residency in dermatology and becoming board certified in dermatology, there are societies such as The American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery (http://www.ascdas.org/), The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (http://www.asds-net.org/), and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (http://www.cosmeticsurgery.org/) that can be joined, by a rigorous application process, open only to board certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons, that offer national medical conferences, additional training, and peer reviewed journals that are highly respected. Any Cosmetic Dermatologist worth calling themselves a Cosmetic Dermatologist should also be members of these societies. Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D. www.CrutchfieldDermatology.com
