i am a mormon and i have never heard of that from either side but the mormons do believe that there is a lot of evil in the world but they are also probably 1 of the most proamerican faiths and they go so far as to believe that america is the promised land and the country that jesus will go to when he comes back
The area in which Joseph Smith really criticized American society was in government. He wrote letters to each of the presidential candidates for the 1844 election year, asking what each would do to help the Mormons get their land back in Jackson County (Mormon families had been driven out by mobs). However, only three candidates responded, each of them basically saying they wouldn't make a decision before they were elected (none of them wanted to lose the Missouri or Illinois votes).
Disgusted with government leaders, Joseph Smith decided to run for president himself. It is in his political platform that we find his main criticism of American society:

Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 - June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader and the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Upon his birth, Joseph Smith was named Joseph Smith. Throughout his life he was called Joseph Smith, Jr. because his father's name is also Joseph Smith. His son was named Joseph Smith, III. His enemies often referred to him as Joe Smith. This was intended to be very disrespectful, and it was often offensive.
