i am a mormon and i have never heard of that from either side but the mormons do believe that there is a lot of evil in the world but they are also probably 1 of the most proamerican faiths and they go so far as to believe that america is the promised land and the country that jesus will go to when he comes back

∙ 11y agoThe area in which Joseph Smith really criticized American society was in government. He wrote letters to each of the presidential candidates for the 1844 election year, asking what each would do to help the Mormons get their land back in Jackson County (Mormon families had been driven out by mobs). However, only three candidates responded, each of them basically saying they wouldn't make a decision before they were elected (none of them wanted to lose the Missouri or Illinois votes).
Disgusted with government leaders, Joseph Smith decided to run for president himself. It is in his political platform that we find his main criticism of American society:
- He wanted to reduce the wage of Congressman to $2 a day while in session (His reasoning was that was about what farmers made, and he said the only difference between a farmer and a congressman was that a farmer was honest...)
- He wanted to reform the American jail system, turning them into institutions of learning. He wanted prisoners to each learn a trade so that when they were released they would be able to give back to society.
- He was an expansionist - wanted to take in all of North America as United States in his first term
- Finally he wanted to end slavery. His idea was to pay southern slave owners for the freedom of all existing slaves. He thought property from the expansion could be used to buy the slaves' freedom.
