Papua New Guinea shares a land border with just one other country: Indonesia. The Indonesian province of West papua occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea, while Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half.

Its other nearest neighbours are Australia (which lies just South of New Guinea) and the remainder of Indonesia (which consists of a long string of islands that lie both to the West and East of it), the Solomon Islands, directly to the east. To the west is Timor Leste, an independent state which was once part of Indonesia.

Other neighbouring countries include the Philippines (to the North West), and Malaysia (just West of the Philippines), but these are some considerable distance away.

Australia does not have a land border with any country. However, it does have official borders / maritime boundary treaties with other countries, as specific water borders are officially laid out.
