They look a pinkish grey when newborn. They don't have much hair then and don't have a full coat until around 2 months old. An adult polar bear's skin is black. The newborns' skin turns blacker with age, but at first the skin looks more grey with a hint of pink. The hair and fur is not white as it appears and each hair is hollow (the trapped air helps with insulation). The fur of a polar bear is colorless and can appear from white to light tan depending on the lighting.
Most are black, but in the western part of their range many are brown. There is a white and a slate blue color races found in the Northwest.
