Shetland ponies have all the same base colors of most breeds, chestnut, black, bay, brown. The modifing alleles grey, creme, silver and dun. The sliver gene has been historically common in it's most obvious form of a chocolate colored body with a white mane and tail (black horse with the silver gene) .
They also come in the spotting patterns of tobiano, sabino and overo as well as roan.
Shetland ponys come in all sorts of colours, like black, brown, white, brown and white, black and white, black and brown.

The term pony is defined by the animal's height so a pony can come from anywhere. Pony breeds have been developed in many different countries. Examples are the Shetland Pony which is named after Shetland Island in Scotland, the Connemara is from Ireland, the POA (Pony of the Americas) was developed in the USA.
I do believe that the Dartmoor pony is more rare than the Shetland pony.

That is a matter of oppinion. Of course the full name of the Shetland is the Shetland Pony. A pony is any horse under 14 hands. This could be just about any breed, wheras, the shetland is just one breed.
