Poe was never found 'dead'. On October 3, 1849, he was found in an incoherent state outside Ryan's Saloon in Baltimore. He was taken to Washington University Hospital where he died on October 7, 1849 never having gained coherence.

Literature found fertile ground in exploring the natural fear of being buried alive. One of Edgar Allan Poe's Horror stories, "The Premature Burial", is about a person suffering from taphophobia. Other Poe stories about premature burial are "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Cask of Amontillado". Fear of burial alive was deeply rooted in Western culture in the nineteenth century, and Poe was taking advantage of the public's fascination with it. Hundreds of cases were reported in which doctors mistakenly pronounced people dead. In this period, coffins occasionally were equipped with emergency devices to allow the "corpse" to call for help, should he or she turn out to be still living.

Poe was last seen alive at Washington College Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in the early morning of 7 October 1849 (or perhaps the night before), but you probably mean when Poe still had his wits about him. That would be on the day Poe left Richmond, Virginia: 27 September, 1849. Curiously, Poe was bound for his home in New York, but he was found by Joseph W. Walker on 3 October, 1849 in the streets of Baltimore, Maryland "in great distress [. . . and] in need of immediate assistance."
