The separation (dispersion) of white light into it different components (different wavelengths) caused by the light entering into a more optically dense medium, such as rainwater or glass from a less optically dense medium such as as air or a vacuum. Each wavelength or colour is slowed down by a different amount and so they separate out from each other.
