Water make up.

Improper chemical service.

Redwood hot tub: bad chemical maint.

Fiberglass spa: same as above.

Plaster spa: It will also be the lime in the plaster mix. This spa will always have a demand for acid to adjust the pH and total alkalinity. And include all of the above.

Do you mean a redwood hot tub? Or a fiberglass or plaster spa?

Use baking soda or muriatic acid in small amounts and test the water within 10 to 15 min. and adjust again if needed. It will not take much to change the chemical balance of the water.

In many cases, foaming in hot tubs is caused by soap residual on bathing suits-

better to wash suits by hand and rinse thouroughly, or not use them at all!

Additionally, foaming can occur when lotions, oils, or cosmetics enter the hot tub- try to keep them out! Most important is a clean filter and properly balanced hot tub water-- see a spa care professional for testing as needed.

Is swimming in a saltwater swimming pool like swimming in the ocean?

Sorry, but swimming in a saltwater pool is a lot different than swimming in the ocean. In the ocean, pollutants like oil, gasoline, and trash combine with fish urine and dead animals. Another big difference in a pool is that there are no waves! In the ocean, rip tides and tidal waves are a big part of the ocean's cycle. In your pool, waves are non-existent.
