Shooting pains in the back are usually from muscle spasms. If you get the pain when you twist, turn, bend over, or lift something heavy, it's most likely muscle spasms... I would expect you to also have tender areas, and even "knots" where the muscles are spasming. Since you didn't indicate shooting pains into an arm or leg, that increases the odds that this is what it is..

If so try heat to the affected area, or even ice... Some folks do better with one over the other...

Have this a lot? You might want to try buying a Homedic Massager (no, I don't work for them) and use it on your back. I have one (actually I've had several, but worn them all out!) and it really helps! I used to recommend it to many of my patients, as well...
