There are several possibilities.
One: Transmission trouble...slipping bands(simple adjustment) or worn out parts (needing a rebuild or replacement).
Two: Motherboard controlling the engine operation could have a short in it or a crack causing confused signals to the engine.
Three: Bad Oxygen Sensor in the exhause pipe.
Four: Bad PCV Valve on the rocker arm cover.
Five: Very unlikely but it happened to me just once- broken spring controlling the return of the gas pedal. But that made the engine race more than anything else.
