The Mormons moved west because it became unsafe for them to stay in Illinois. Joseph Smith, their leader, had been killed. The God told Brigham Young, the new leader, to lead the group to Utah. Young knew the direction because he had read General John C Fremont's description of the place as an ideal place to establish a settlement.
