During the 1911 race, a multi-car accident occurred on the main straightaway, right in front of the scoring stand. Many volunteer score keepers scurried out of the way when the cars crashed. For several laps, no one was scoring the action. It would be the Speedway's first scoring controversy and eventual runner-up Ralph Mulford went to his grave believing he had been the first "500" winner. The man credited with the winning car was Ray Harroun. His Marmon "Wasp" is reported to be the first car with a rear-view mirror and the only single-seat car entered in the race that day. He was an engineer who designed the car himself. He claimed it vibrated so badly that he couldn't see straight.
Ray Harroun, winner of the Indy 500 in 1911, won $14,250. Click on the '1911 Indy 500 Box Score' link below to see who raced in the first ever Indianapolis 500, where they finished, and how much money they won.
