What can you feed your sick dog?

I suggest you contact your local vet. If your dog has been throwing up or has very loose stool, it could be as simple as his eating something he is not used to or could not tollerate. When my dogs have upset stomachs I feed them a boiled chicken and white rice mixture until they can tolerate something closer to their normal diet. If the loose stool goes on for more than a couple of days or has blood, take the dog to the vet. I have a very sick 4lb Yorkie, and was about to feed him Gerber baby food, DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG BABY FOOD! It is toxic to dogs. So what I did was take some of his normal dry food and put it in a zip lock. I then used a hammer to crush it into a fine powder. Add some warm water and you have baby food for a dog. I had to feed my dog with a syringe because he was really weak. ===== IRRESPONSIBLE and ignorant answer above. Baby food is NOT toxic to dogs, period. It is perfectly acceptable and given to sick dogs, along with plain white rice (made almost into a paste) or brown rice. -------- Well, Lets review facts- not *assumptions* Dogs have an entirely different physiological body chemistry when compared to humans. Human baby food is specially formulated to ensure that a growing baby has the essential nutrients for their own growth and development. Dog food is likewise specially formulated to ensure that puppies and dogs have the nutrients that they need. It is not ideal to feed a dog, let alone one that is sick, human food because of the caloric and nutritional differences. A common ingredient in most baby food is onion powder which is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and can cause DEATH! Why feed this to an already sick dog? Yes dogs can eat human food but it is not IDEAL for their chemistry! Responsible pet owners will only provide food that is COMPLETELY safe. You CAN give a baby ice cream, candy, soda, and fast food- but that is irresponsible and ignorant. A quick Google search will confirm this. Now, as suggested Vet care maybe in order. If all is well then process either dry or wet dog food, either manually with a mortar and pestle or in a blender/ food processor. You will then have PERFECT BABY FOOD for a SICK DOG!

It depends on the illness:

• COMMON COLD (KENNEL COUGH) - Nothing different from his regular food, unless he does not have an appetite. Then you may add raw meat (this does not hurt your dog) or cooked meat, or maybe any sauce you have in your refrigerator. Dogs love any sauce with tomatoes! (Spaghetti, tomato paste, ketchup, etc.)
• STOMACH PROBLEMS- If your dog is vomiting, I suggest you feed him (or her) rice. Rice of any sort (without spices, that is) is very gentle on the stomach and has carbohydrates to keep your dogs energy up. You can gradually add more and more dog food to the mixture until he or she feels better.

(If he has stomach problems) DON'T FEED YOUR DOG:

• Rawhide bones. This is extremely important... rawhide can be hard to digest and won't help dogs with stomach problems.
• Bone-in meat. If the bone is in the meat, it is too soft. Your dog will actually EAT these and most dogs get stomach problems.
• Ham bones. These bones are soft and can easily be eaten. Swallowed. Chewed. Etc.

Carrots, rice pudding, natural yoghurt or eggs. More importantly you need to keep the dog hydrated. Apart from fresh water, liquid and sloppy foods are very good for this.

Dogs should only be fed dairy produce if they are not lactose intolerant as it can cause diarrhoea. Know your dog.

Depends to the illness of the dog. You should take the dog to his/her vet, so they can provide you medications for the dog and tell you if you need to change their food (they'll also tell you what kind of food you should start giving to the dog).

Always remember when changing a dog's food to do it gradually; say the dog currently eats 1 cup of Food A and you need to start giving in Food B. You should give the dog 1 cup of A the first day, 3/4 of cup of A + 1/4 of cups of B for 2 days, 1/2 of cup of A + 1/2 of cup of B for 3 days, 1/4 of cup of A + 3/4 of cup of B for 2 days, and finally 1 cup of B the last day. The food changing process should take about a week.
