Research, mostly. There is no indigenous population, and there is not much reason, other than research (or research support), to be there.

Almost all of them are scientists conducting experiments.

Another Answer

As a temporary resident, you can perform scientific research in pursuit of an answer to a unique scientific question, or you can perform work in support of such science.

You can also be a cruise-ship tourist in Antarctica, and visit beaches thanks to kodiak transport between the beach and the ship.

Finally, you can explore by funding an expedition, flying to the continent and trudging across the polar ice or climbing a polar mountain.

When you are a tourist in Antarctica, you are limited to the activities arranged by your tour operator.

These may include a visit to a working research station, a visit to an abandoned research station, a visit to a penguin colony, a visit to a volcanic beach, on-board lectures and so forth. You can cruise through amazing polar vistas where the Southern Ocean is not frozen.

As well, all hospitality services are provided aboard the cruise ship, since there are no commercial ventures anywhere on the continent.

Tourists who are expeditioners can hike (but are advised to go through intense training first). Commercial tourists can watch whales, visit research stations to learn about what research they're conducting at that time. They can visit penguin and seal communities on the beaches. Tourism takes place during the austral summer months only.
