Yes. Volcanic eruptions can be extremely dangerous. In some cases death tolls have been in the tens of thousands. Explosive volcanic eruptions are the most dangerous. These produce clouds of superheated ash, rock, and gas. These clouds sometimes race down the sides of a volcano as pyroclastic flows, killing anyone unfortunate enough to be cught in their path. In 1902 a pyroclasic flow struck the city of St Pierre on the island of Marinique, killing more than 30,000 people Only two people in the city survived. Even falling ash that has cooled is dangerous; it can clog engines, weight down on roofs, and damage and clog the lungs. When mixed with water the ash can form dense mudflows called lahars. These behave like a liquid but ar as dense as concrete, hardening when they stop. In 1985 a lahar struck the town of Armero, Columbia. Of the 29,000 people in the town, more than 20,000 died. Volcanoes can also produce landslides and toxic gasses.
