It depends what is wrong with your teeth. Sometimes the toothache might be just an ordinary one, but if it occurs longer, then it is most likely you have a hole in your tooth. This is treated by a filling, which is available DIY or at the dentists. Dentists fillings are more efficient depending on how careful you are with DIY objects.

*DIY means DO IT YOURSELF in case you did not know!

You can get very quick relief with clove oil.

Just put a little on some cotton wool and apply it to the tooth

between the gum and the cheek. You can use clove powder

or whole crushed clove, but its not as good. Take care not to swallow

the saliva. It's hot but its safe.

You can also get some relief by putting some pain relieving gel into the skin

close to the tooth. Do not put it into the mouth.

You can take Calcium (a mineral needed by our bodies) in large amounts. I've done this several times for some bad, bad toothaches and the pain has gone away each time. I have no medical training, so check with your doctor or nutritionalist for possible side effects or other concerns, but I know of none. Calcium is available in different types and some are more easily absorbed than others, so it's best to get a type that is more easily absorbed.

ibuprofen (advil) is probably best to reduce swelling; this will relieve pressure on the nerve. Tylenol can also help, but Aspirin should be avoided because it may lead to bleeding if the tooth must be pulled.

There are also many products available that can be brushed onto the tooth or gums to numb them, but these only treat the pain and do not fix the underlying problem.

Pain with swelling can mean an infection and should be checked out by a dentist if it persists.

How long does a toothache last?

A toothache can last for weeks or months until you visit a dentist. Orajel tooth desentisizer is very good on toothaches. The natural course for an untreated toothache caused by a cavity or other decay is: bad ---> worse ----> abscess --->death. This is generally viewed as bad. Inserting a visit to he dentist early in the sequence can avoid the abscess/death part.
