To truly decrease global climate change will not be easy. Global climate change is caused by the massive release and build-up of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased drastically over the last 50 years because of human activities, such as coal-driven energy production and the use of the combustion engine for transportation. People will have to make large, inconvenient, unpopular changes in their daily lives in order to reduce their carbon footprint, or the amount of carbon dioxide produced by each individual. Some ideas for reducing the release of carbon into the atmosphere include:

-- reducing the use of automobiles and instead using public transportation

-- using trains to transport goods instead of trucks. (Trains are much more efficient.)

-- using alternative energy such as wind and solar energy instead of energy produced by coal and petroleum

-- living near one's place of work in cities instead of living in the suburbs and commuting to work

-- eating locally-grown food instead of food that has been flown or trucked in from distant regions or countries
