The kind of spider that is large 3 inches black and fuzzy with white stripes and found in the Bahamas is a tarantula. These tend to hide most of the time, but they may come out when it rains or if they are disturbed.
An insect found in the desert that has a black thorax and a fuzzy red body is known as a velvet ant. They are technically a type of wasp, and they can cause severely painful stings.
If it is squat, squarish and furry, less than a half inch long, it may be a harmless species of jumping spider we have in Michigan as well. If it's larger it may be another species. The good news is that it can't be a Black Widow spider (Latrodectus family), which has similar coloring, but is shiny like patent leather. Black widow markings vary by species (some even have white markings instead of red), but there are no fuzzy spiders in that family. They are opaque and very shiny, usually with long legs.
