The Union Army of the Potomac led by Major General George B. McClellan fought for the United States. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee fought for the Confederate States of America, or the South. In other words, Americans fought the Battle of Antietam. Union General George B. McClellan outnumbered the enemy and the Rebels escaped total defeat in that McClellan never used all of his reserves. If he had, he might have defeated Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in detail. Although there were events and battles leading up to Antietam, the battle here was on September 17, 1862. On that day, there were more American casualties then on any other day of battle in US history.

The one day US Civil War Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day battle in US history. And, it would prove to be the same in all future US wars and battles. The Battle of Antietam pitted the Army of Northern Virginia, the force led by General Robert E. Lee against the Union's Army of the Potomac. This army was led by Major General George B. McClellan. Casualties for the single day battle totaled almost 25,000 troops. In military terms, the battle was a technical draw. With that said, General Lee was in Union territory and had no recourse but to retreat back to Virginia and replenish his army.
