Wind is a form of solar energy. Winds are caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun. The wind turbines spin round and produce electricity. This is a good way of producing electricity as the wind will never go.

Because the Government wants to have Clean and renewable energy. Businesses that invest in Wind turbines also get production tax credits which is always good for a business.

At least that is what many believe. The truth is they produce almost zero power. They are forced on utilities by mandates and the horrible record of their output is hidden.

Wind turbine ratings are based on 28 mph winds. Actual wind never reaches this average. Let's assume 14 mph AVERAGE wind. that is 10% of what the utility is being forced to say is the output. The remaining 10% is still varying so a fossil fuel plant is let running to support these systems when the wind hits lulls. These plants take long periods of time to get to 100% so we leave them running. Net result is that we hide the reality. The fossil fuel plants still run and consume fuel and belch CO2. Wind has yet to shut down a single fossil fuel plant world wide.

Harnessing wind power is a means of creating renewable, clean energy that has none of the harmful side effects of other energy sources such as coal, petroleum, etc.

A2: Is it more economical for you than other sources of energy.

I once wrote up a proposal for a large wind turbine for a businessman. He at first said what he wanted was, 'renewable, clean energy that has none of the harmful side effects of other energy sources...' and that will give him self-sufficiency. He had one of the windiest locations in state.

When it came down to buying such a system, he said it HAD TO BE more economical than electricity from his current provider...4.5 cents per kWh. He didn't buy it.

14 years ago a local utility purchased a 600 KW wind turbine. Last year the system was down for many months waiting for new bearings. It had produced only enough electric power to sell in a special highly priced program, a Green Program, to pay for the initial cost only. There was no money to replace the bearings, to do other needed maintenance, to provide a source of electricity more economical than what other sources could do. It could provide no such benefit to the community and no return on the investment of the owners of the utility. It was totally dependent on credits from state and federal governments to even exist.

Would you use such a wind turbine?
