There are actually 4 elementary image transformations: 1) translation, 2) scaling, 3) rotation, and 4) shear though the first 3 are most often used and understood. These transformation each can be performed independently or combined.
- translation - Moves (or translates) every pixel of an image to the same x or y offset to a new location.
- rotation - Moves every pixel of an image about a given point or axis by some angle.
- scale - Changes the size of a image in the x and/or y dimensions.
- shear - The effect of a shear transformation looks like "pushing'' a geometric object or image in a direction that is parallel to a coordinate plane (3D) or a coordinate axis (2D).
