Square Castles had connected walls which can be burnt from one corner to another. This can happen by digging a tunnel and throwing fire. This feature can affect the whole castle because it can burn down.

Answer this question…Depending on the layout of the keep and the number of arrow slits, Square ones can bring more bowmen to target than a round one because of the straight walls, curved walls are safer, from cannon balls because, unless the hit is straight, the curve will cause the ball to "glance off" straight walls dont do that

What are shell keep castles made from and why?

Shell keep castles are medieval fortresses that are usually built upon a motte. They are made from stone. Some examples of stone keep castles include the Round Tower on Windsor Castle and the Clifford's Tower on York Castle.

What are the weaknesses of a shell or round keep castle?

Arrows can easily fly over the top into the castle, which is apparent in nearly all castles. There are not many other weaknesses, although the outer wall is slightly skinnier due to its shape. Also, enemies can easily surround the castle for no means of escape.

Why were castles with a shell keep better than Norman motte and bailey catles?

A shell on a castle is the round part on top. Since Norman Motte and Bailey castles were first made of wood, the castle was not sturdy enough to support the shell.

When was the shell keep castles built?

Shell Keep castles were built in the year 1172! +++ Not sure where the adjective "shell" comes from, but castles with a keep - the central building in the complex, and the main accommodation - were built mainly in the few centuries of the Mediaeval period , not just in one arbitrary year.
