Spray heads and nozzles are the least water efficient of the traditional sprinklers since they are susceptible to wind drift. However, installation is very cost effective for small areas with low-height plant cover.
Rotors and multi-stream rotators increase water stream and droplet size, and so apply water more efficiently than sprays. Installation is very cost effective for medium and large areas. An advantage of multi-streams over rotors is that they are adaptable to small and irregularly shaped areas like parking stips.
Drip irrigation (low-flow emission of water close to the plant's root zone) is an increasingly popular replacement for traditional sprinklers because, when designed well, it delivers the highest water efficiency.
