Today, Vietnamese people dress like Westerners usually. Jeans and T-shirts are common among men and women. City work clothes consist of business outfits with men wearing a collared shirt, sometimes a tie, leather shoes and slacks. Women wear business suits or dresses. Sandals are often worn as an informal shoe.

It's not rare to see people doing their market shopping or eating a bowl of pho at a roadside stall in what westerners typically think of as pajamas. In the extreme heat, causal loose fitting clothes in loud colors and prints that are very pajama-like seem to be a favorite among women.

In the countryside, especially for farmers, men and women are often still seen wearing the loose communist-era style garments, which are drab in color and make men and women look almost identical. The traditional conical hats are worn by rural people and are worn less frequently in cities.

Traditional garments are still worn for holidays, weddings, and other special occasions. Some places of business like restaurants and banks might use the traditional long Vietnamese dress with pants as part of their uniform.

A well-known garment is the "ao dai", a light tunic-like top paired with white pants.

These are also loose garments but are very feminine and classy. Vietnamese garments are usually very loose to allow easy movement and cooling.
