The terms "inferior planet" and "superior planet" were originally used in the geocentric cosmology of Claudius Ptolemy to differentiate those planets (Mercury and Venus) that were between the stationary Earth and the orbiting Sun from those planets (Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn), which lay beyond the Sun's orbit.

The terms are now used with the heliocentric model.

"Inferior Planets" have orbits closer to the Sun than the Earth's orbit.
They are Mercury and Venus.

The "Superior Planets" have orbits outside the Earth's orbit.

They are Mars,Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

So, the meaning is slightly different from "Inner Planets" and "Outer Planets".

Planets can be classified into two groups based on their distancefrom the Suncompared with the Earth's distancefrom the Sun. The groups are:

1) Inferior Planets (planets closer to the Sun than Earth): Mercury and Venus.

2) Superior Planets (planets further from the Sun than Earth): Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

The inferior planets are (as seen from Earth) Mercury and Venus, as they orbit the Sun inside of Earth's orbit. The superior planets are those which orbit the Sun outside of our own orbit: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The minor bodies and dwarf planets in our solar system are also, in most part, superior bodies too.

  • They orbit further from the Sun than the Earth's orbit.
  • Therefore they have longer periods of revolution around the Sun.

Do only the inner planets have atmospheres?

Negative, not only do the inner planets have atmospheres, but the outer planets also have atmospheres. The masses of the outer planets are great, enough easily to hold an atmosphere. In fact it's Mercury, an inner planet, that has almost no atmosphere. True, Mercury has a less mass and the closeness to the sun make it impossible to hold on a atmosphere. As matter in fact, Mars had a atmosphere, but the solar wind had almost eaten all the atmosphere that Mars had.
