Small pollen cones produce haploid microspores which develop into a pollen grain containing the male gametophyte. Large ovulate cones produce haploid megaspores which develop into female gametophytes. In flowers, stamens produce microspores that develop into pollen grains containing male gametophytes. Carpels make megaspores which develop into female gametophytes.
