Some of the symptoms of COPD are wheezing, coughing, tightness of chest, difficulty breathing while exerting oneself, and having to clear mucus first thing in the morning and several times a day. The lungs are severely damaged by the time COPD is diagnosed.

People who develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) find it hard to breathe. Shortness of breath, wheezing, mucus production and chronic coughing are the major symptoms of the disease. Unfortunately, the disease is progressive and will continue to get worse. The disease is treatable but not curable, as lung tissues have been damaged over time.

COPD causes disability in most people affected by it. COPD ranks right behind Heart disease and cancer in leading causes of death in the United States. The disease affects over 12 million people. A slowly developing disease, COPD gradually wears out the patient, limiting their ability to lead a normal life. While there is no cure, changes in lifestyle can help, as can various treatments.

Cigarette smoking is a major cause of COPD. Most people with the disease smoke or have smoked in the past. Other causes of the disease include lung irritation from air pollution, dust or chemical fumes. Coughing with significant amounts of mucus, shortness of breath and a feeling of tightness in the chest are the symptoms most people with COPD exhibit.

Smoking or inhaling chemical fumes damages the tissues of the lung. When a person breathes, air moves into the lungs via bronchial tubes. Inside the lungs, the bronchial tubes runs into smaller tubes called bronchioles. Tiny air sacs called alveoli are at the end of these smaller tubes. Oxygen from the air passes into the blood system from the alveoli walls. Carbon dioxide moves from the capillaries, tiny blood vessels, into the air sacs at the same time. Over time, COPD develops because bronchial tubes and alveoli have been damaged.

COPD expresses itself in two main conditions, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Most people with COPD have both conditions. In chronic bronchitis, the lining of the bronchial tubes is inflamed, and a lot of mucus obstructs the airways. With emphysema, the air sacs are damaged, causing them to be far less effective in the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchanges.

The best way to avoid COPD is to stop smoking altogether. Living healthy by eating a good diet and regular exercise can help in cases of COPD, although once damaged, lung tissue cannot be repaired.
