It is important that, if you are pregnant and have high blood pressure you discuss it with your family physician.

High blood pressure in pregnancy may be pre-existing (the woman already had it before conception) or it may be brought on by pregnancy. The latter is called pregnancy-induced (or gestational) hypertension.

Either way, it must be monitored and well controlled because otherwise is can pose risks for both the mother and the baby.

High blood pressure developing after the 20th week of pregnancy might be a sign that pre-eclampsia is developing. This condition needs to be monitored closely as rarely it can develop into life-threatening eclampsia.

Pre-existing high blood pressure should be controlled but the choice of drug is important to ensure it is safe for the developing baby.

Absolutely. The higher your blood pressure, the more turbulence it creates as your blood flows through your arteries. This turbulence can cause a piece of plaque that may line your blood vessels (as a consequence of high cholesterol) to come loose. When this plaque comes loose, it can occlude blood flow in the arteries around your heart (a heart attack) or in your brain (a stroke) or anywhere, for that matter. Having high blood pressure also increases your chances of having kidney failure.
