Countries must first apply for membership. There then follows a long process of making sure that they comply with certain conditions, like in relation to their economy, laws, records on human rights and other things. When they meet these criteria and other things, their application can be approved and they will be accepted as members. The process can take years.

The main criteria for joining the EU are

1. The country willing to join should have stable democracy which respects law and human rights.

2. It should accept union laws, obligations of membership.

3. It should have a good market economy which must be capable of competition within the EU.
