You can get your car impounded. Have to pay impound fees, plus hefty fines including court fees, depending on how far out your tags are. You could also be cited in some states for driving without insurance on top of all that. In Virginia, you get fine but car do not impounded if tag expired within 3 month. Get renew on tag before going to court (time limit must be within 3 month of tags expired). If you don't renew tag, the car can be impounded from court order. Any tag expire over 3 months will be impounded.
It is important to keep a vehicles tags up to date. The penalties for not doing so can be a fine, but if a person gets everything updated before the court date, the penalties can be avoided.
