introduction, body, conclusion
It can be assumed that the questioner is asking about the five steps of the writing process. These are:
This is a tool, a very artificial tool. All of these things should be done, but to drive students into this mold does them a disservice.
Writing is a natural thing. It is an extension of speaking that every person does. It is refined communication and nothing more. Yes, it can be a more efficient means of communicating large amounts of information. Yes, it can be a valuable storage method. but, writing is far more than its parts, or even the sum of its parts. Writing is the creation of a living thing. It is a connection made between the author and the audience. It is the birth of new meaning and understanding.
An assigned report can be the formulaic script that many teachers expect, and simultaneously hate, or it can be a true expression of the writer. You do this already every day. When you get up in the morning and talk to your parents over the breakfast table, you are doing it. When you meet your friends at school, you are doing it. When you raise your hand in the classroom, you are doing it. When you hang out on the street, when you order food at McDonalds, when you text that girl or guy you like and tell them what they mean to, in all of this you are doing it. It is alive in you, it is part of you, it is who you are and how you share that.
Think about it this way: you the writer have the opportunity to share with someone else in a way that cannot be accomplished in any other manner. You can reach for that spiritual connection that no other means of communication can offer. You have the opportunity to speak to your audience without the fear of interruption. While your audience reads your writing, nothing in the world exists but what you wrote, and the meaning they make with it.
You can choose to take the five steps of the writing process, or you can put words on paper, and craft it into what you want it say. I'm not saying don't make use of the tool (the writing process), just don't make the mistake of letting it define you in your writing.
Be organic. Do what you already know so well how to do.
