Baroque subjects were religious, mythological, landscape, still life. Rococo partly the same things, but new was describing the happy life of those who did not work. And portraiture has always been a big thing.
The dominent theme of baroque painting was the beginnings of "Enlightenment." By painting scenes of ordinary life instead of just biblical or royal genre, baroque painters brought about a profound change in the way the world "thought" in terms of huministic thinking. Suddenly, ordinary people, including the peasants were human too. They weren't irrelevent as they once were. They were people with souls, just like everyone else and deserved the very best that life had to offer through what they could achieve.
