Bed bug bites do not commonly cause serious reactions in humans. But, they are annoying enough to cause stresses in our lives as well. Some people that have experienced bed bugs in their home have problems with sleeping in their beds. They may feel anxiety and worry about the bed bugs, even knowing that they are not going to cause a great deal of damage to them. This fear can lead to insomnia as well. At an extreme level, bed bugs can cause things like distress and alarm. At some times, it can also cause delusional parasitosis as well. Here, a person becomes delusional, thinking that they see and feel the bed bugs on their skin. The amount of blood that you will lose because of the bed bug is a very small amount and will likely not affect the host at all. They probably will not notice any feelings caused by this problem. Also, bed bugs are not known to cause any type of disease. They are not known to carry and transmit diseases either. This is unlike that of a mosquito that can transmit a disease to its host. They have been known to carry what is called pathogens for the plague and for hepatitis B, but this is just from the immunities that they have built up from these diseases over the course of time. The bed bug bite that does cause a serve reaction or one that leaves a welt on the skin can become infected if the individual scratches at the area and by doing this, supplies the necessary bacteria to cause the infection in the skin of the host

The following are some basic suggestions of things to do or look for to help determine if there are bed bugs in your home.

  1. Bites - One of the most common reasons people suspect bed bug infestations are the appearance of bug bites. Bed bugs will usually feed while people are sleeping, so check over your body in the mornings for any small red bites, or unexplainable marks. **Note that not all individuals will have a reaction to bed bug bites, some can go on being bitten for months and never know.
  2. Waste - Bed bugs generally leave behind a sufficient amount of waste. Things to look for include dark spots on your mattress or box spring, skin castings and of course dead bugs.
  3. Traps - There are numerous passive bed bug monitors and traps available on the market. Two of these that are carried by our store, ProFlyControl (available here) are ClimbUp Interceptors, and BDS's. Both of these items will trap bed bugs attempting to get onto or off of furniture, and will allow them to be identified. You can also make a somewhat effective trap by using double-sided tape (try carpet tape).
  4. Hunting - Bed bugs are known to be most active around dawn. If you are searching for live bugs, this is the best time to look. An untrained eye is much more likely to find bugs at this time of day, with the assistance of a flashlight.
  5. Know Where To Look - Bed bugs are excellent at hiding, so when attempting a game of bed bug hide-and-seek, you must know their favorite spots. The smaller the space, the better, be sure to search seams, folds, creases in all furniture in the room. Bed bugs are small and can hide in some very unlikely places.

While bedbugs have been known to harbor pathogens in their bodies, including plague and hepatitis B, they have not been linked to the transmission of any disease and are not regarded as a medical threat. Some individuals, however, can get skin infections and scars from scratching bites. While bedbugs are not regarded as a vector of transmissible diseases, they may be a significant source of alarm or distress.

Bed bugs bite and suck blood from humans. Bed bugs are most active at night and bite any exposed areas of skin while an individual is sleeping. The face, neck, hands, and arms are common sites for bed bug bites. The bite itself is painless and is not noticed. Small, flat, or raised bumps on the skin are the most common sign; redness, swelling, and itching commonly occur. If scratched, the bite areas can become infected. A peculiarity of bed bug bites is the tendency to find several bites lined up in a row. Infectious disease specialists refer to this as the "breakfast, lunch, and dinner" sign signifying the sequential feeding that occurs from site to site.

Bed bug bites may go unnoticed or be mistaken for flea or mosquito bites or other types of rash or skin conditions.

If you don't have many, you will only get a couple of bites, if you have a few, then you will notice that bites all appear in pretty much a straigh line - can take a few days to show. Bed bugs are hard to spot, so look for little black spots near the edges of beds, near cracks in walls, and furniture near to the bed as they defecate before going back to their hidey hole
