The movement of Impressionism ran from 1870 to 1890. The Industrial Revolution was probably the biggest event. Other world events during those years include the Franco-Prussian War, 1870; Leo Tolstoy publishes 'Anna Karenina' in 1875; George Eastman patents a process to make dry photographic plates in 1879; the London 'tube' is built in 1884; Queen Victoria celebrates her Golden Jubilee in 1887; Loie Fuller uses silk scarves and electric lights to create her 'serpentine dance' in 1889.
Impressionism GREATLY influenced art history. This art movement more or less gave birth to contemporary / modern art due to the shift from the traditional "salon" paintings. Impressionists wanted to capture the "fleeting" moments in nature, which were not embodied by the salon paintings since those paintings are very still - they have no sense of movement. Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Matisse are all examples of artists whose works were able to form due to the impressionists since they all lean toward abstract and conceptual art rather than still and "real" art.
